Presentations

Over the past few years, I’ve given the following talks. I enjoy sharing the tools, techniques and opinions that help me make things.

Testing 101

A primer to front-end testing that I presented as a lunch and learn. I introduce concepts, terms and tools to help bootstrap both unit and end to end testing with jasmine.

Modern Web Concepts

In this session, I’ll share my thoughts and process to creating web sites and apps. It will be frontend centric, as that is my area of expertise, and be more about concepts than code sharing. My goal is to promote some “best practices” that will help you make better websites with less frustration (as well as dispel a few myths).

Design in the browser

I’d like to share some tools and techniques I’ve incorporated into my process that help me jump straight from paper to text editor. Sometimes, fiddling around with layouts in Photoshop feels kludgy and distracting. Solving layout issues with markup can help you focus on why bits of content are important and ultimately help you make better designs. We’ve covered what tools like Sass and Compass are in the past. This time, I’ll share how these things fit into an actual workflow.

Smarter Styling with Sass

The simplicity of CSS is one of it’s greatest strengths, but sometimes you want more elegant solutions. That’s where Sass comes in. Sass is an extension of CSS3, adding nested rules, variables, mixins, selector inheritance, and more. I’ll show you how Sass can help you write better, more bullet resistant, and easier to maintain style sheets. I’ll also share how Sass has helped me solve real world challenges such as creating responsive layouts.
